Executive Neurocoaching – Neuropsychotherapeutic Solution-Focused Executive Coaching

The Role of Executive Coaching

Leaders and senior managers are faced with five major contemporary challenges:leadership challenge

  • The increasing rate of change and volume of “information”
  • Increasing performance demands in ultra-competitive markets
  • Pressure to find, develop, connect with and retain exceptional talent
  • Personal and organisational reputation management in harshly judgemental environments
  • Continuing “leader loneliness”, even in the most open of organisations

Common triggers for engaging an executive coach include:

  • As a non-judgemental, safe sounding board for ideas, problems and solutions
  • As a provider of personal self-development training for those seeking to reach their potential or who have taken on a new role or responsibilities
  • As a facilitator of goal-setting and the pathways to achieving them
  • As someone who is given permission to respectfully question assumptions and preconceptions, so as to broaden perspectives and reveal new ways of thinking and problem solving
  • As an unconditional personal supporter in stressful and challenging environments

Solution-Focused Coaching

Closely linked to solution-focused psychotherapy, true solution-focused executive coaching has proven to be very effective, gaining in popularity amongst senior executive in recent years, working on the principle that most people are the experts in their own lives. It is the role of the solution-focused executive coach to help turn problems and challenges into goals, and to help identify the pathways to achieve them by drawing on the client’s competencies, successes, resources and supports.

In its purest form, solution-focused executive coaching:

  • Helps clients to set their own goals and plan how to achieving them
  • Aims to reveal and provoke thoughts and explore possibilities, but not to teach
  • Draws on existing competencies, strengths and supports
  • Seeks to facilitate emotional and behavioural change progressively but quickly
  • Is unconditionally supportive

Neuropsychotherapy

Neuropsychotherapy recognises that for permanent emotional or behavioural change to occur there must be a change in neural pathways and, to some extent at least, brain development and functionality. How we think, react and behave are the result of the physical design, connections and processes of our brain, and so it is impossible to change one without changing the other. By helping clients to understand how their thoughts and brain processes influence and shape one another, they will be better able to create, manage and sustain the positive changes they are seeking. Common outcomes are improved self-awareness, self-management, stress management, problem-solving and relationships.

Key components of neuropsychotherapy include:

  • An unconditionally safe environment and therapeutic relationship
  • Sharing of feelings, perspectives, challenges and goals
  • Principle of change within the brain as a prerequisite to creating permanent solutions
  • Sharing of neuroscientific information about underlying causes and solutions
  • Seeks to facilitate long-term brain, emotional and behavioural change progressively but quickly

At the same time, clients are able to take more control of their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, so as to better understand, support and gain the support of others.
