As a pack-species we are genetically driven to fit in with the people around us. This means that dominant workplace cultures & workgroup sub-cultures will constantly influence & shape how employees think, behave & perform. Employers, through the values, words & actions of leaders at all levels have the opportunity, if not responsibility, to create workplace cultures that benefit the performance of the organisation & the well-being of employees within the broader social context.
We describe workplace culture as “The shared, commonly practiced values, goals, customs, standards & behaviours of a purposeful social system”. Workplace culture determines how the employee group routinely thinks, interacts, behaves & performs at work, with profound impacts on organisational & personal purpose, productivity, relationships, reputation, safety & health. These are a few of the things we measure at a neurobiologically-grounded level.
The NeuroSmart® Workplace Culture Assessment stems from neurobiology & organisational psychology. It measures the conscious & subconscious, intrapersonal & interpersonal influences, patterns, penalties & rewards that shape common values & attitudes. By exploring underpinnings rather than merely symptoms, you can improve workplace culture at an intrinsic, affective & sustainable level.
The distress of exclusion & powerful need for inclusion usually leaves individuals with 2 options. One is to give up & leave the group, with or without a fight along the way. The other is to modify personal behaviours, habits, attitudes & perhaps values to fit in, whether those changes are healthy for the individual or productive for the organisation. Individuals with influence can even shift group culture, meaning others have to make adjustments to continue to fit. This is why workplace culture is so powerful – but also changeable, for better or worse.
An “ideal” workplace culture typically sees situational responses dominated by positivity, patience, cooperation, productivity & personal safety, underpinned by shared & deeply held beliefs around identity, purpose, values & ethics. From there differences emerge – for example, of preferences toward individual versus team performance, or indeed of productivity versus social orientation, or of personal well-being versus bottom-line results.
The NeuroSmart® Workplace Culture Assessment is ideal for periodically taking the temperature of your workgroup & workplace cultures, as well as providing meaningful insights into intrinsic underpinnings. This allows you to support, measure & manage the initiatives that are most effective in shaping your preferred cultures from workgroup to workgroup (yes, they will vary in some ways), as well as the across the whole organisation.
You can view results at various levels, from individual workgroups through to the whole organisation, so you can compare, explore & prioritise ongoing development & management. Just let us know a tiny little about your structure & we can tailor the group settings for you.
*Note – This is an anonymous aggregate survey for use in, between & across groups. For individuals, refer to the The NeuroSmart® Predictive Engagement & Motivation Assessment.
